A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
